A barcode alone does not tell you whether something is expired. Standard UPC and EAN-13 barcodes, the ones on groceries, medicine bottles, and household products store only a product identifier. The expiry date is printed on the packaging, not inside the barcode. To find out if a product is expired, you need to do two things: identify the product from its barcode, and then compare the printed date to today's date.

This is the most common question we get and the honest answer is: it depends on the barcode type. Most products you buy at the supermarket use a UPC or EAN-13 barcode. These store only a product ID number (called a GTIN). They do not contain an expiry date the date is only printed on the packaging.
However, GS1-128, DataMatrix, and some QR codes used in pharmaceuticals, warehousing, and industrial products can embed expiry dates directly using GS1 Application Identifier (17) in YYMMDD format. Expirel reads both types and bridges the gap for the ones that do not.
