Expiration Date Checker

Is This Product Expired? Here Is How to Know

A barcode alone does not tell you whether something is expired. Standard UPC and EAN-13 barcodes, the ones on groceries, medicine bottles, and household products store only a product identifier. The expiry date is printed on the packaging, not inside the barcode. To find out if a product is expired, you need to do two things: identify the product from its barcode, and then compare the printed date to today's date.

Expirel makes this instant. Scan the barcode, enter the date from the label, and Expirel shows you a live "Days Left" count for every product in your inventory. When something is past its date, the status changes to "Expired" automatically so you never have to search the packaging again.

Can a Barcode Tell You the Expiry Date?

This is the most common question we get and the honest answer is: it depends on the barcode type. Most products you buy at the supermarket use a UPC or EAN-13 barcode. These store only a product ID number (called a GTIN). They do not contain an expiry date the date is only printed on the packaging.

However, GS1-128, DataMatrix, and some QR codes used in pharmaceuticals, warehousing, and industrial products can embed expiry dates directly using GS1 Application Identifier (17) in YYMMDD format. Expirel reads both types and bridges the gap for the ones that do not.

Barcode Type
Contains Expiry Date?
How Expirel Handles It
UPC / EAN-13
No — product ID only
Expirel reads the product ID, identifies the product name and brand automatically, then lets you enter the expiry date from the label in one tap.
GS1-128 / Code 128
Yes — when encoded
Expirel automatically reads the embedded expiry date when present. No manual entry needed.
GS1 DataMatrix
Yes — when encoded
Full support. Expirel decodes all GS1 fields and auto-populates the expiry date in your inventory record instantly.
QR Code
Yes — when encoded
Expirel reads the QR data and extracts expiry information whenever it is encoded by the manufacturer.

Bottom line: Even when the barcode does not encode the expiry date, Expirel bridges the gap by identifying the product instantly and letting you add the date from the packaging in one tap. Your entire inventory stays organised and tracked. No spreadsheet needed.

FAQ

Expiry Date Barcode Scanner Common Questions

Real answers to the questions people ask most about checking expiry dates from barcodes in English and other languages.

It depends on the barcode type. Standard UPC and EAN-13 barcodes the ones on most supermarket products — store only a product ID number and do not contain an expiry date. The date is only printed on the packaging. However, GS1-128, GS1 DataMatrix, and some QR codes used in pharmaceuticals and warehousing can embed expiry dates using GS1 Application Identifier (17) in YYMMDD format. With Expirel, you scan the barcode to identify the product automatically, then add the expiry date from the packaging in one tap. This gives you the best of both worlds: instant product recognition plus reliable expiry tracking.

To check an expiry date using a barcode, you need a barcode scanner tool that can identify the product and let you log the expiry date. Here is how it works with Expirel: open expirel.com, tap Add Product, scan the barcode with your phone camera, and the product name and details appear automatically. For GS1-128 or DataMatrix barcodes, the expiry date is also extracted automatically. For standard UPC or EAN-13 barcodes, read the date from the packaging and enter it in one tap. Expirel saves it to your inventory and reminds you before the product expires. The entire process takes under 10 seconds.

You can check a product's expiry date from a barcode online for free using the lookup tool on this page. Enter any barcode number and Expirel searches Google, Amazon, and Open Food Facts to identify the product at no cost. To save the product with an expiry date and get automatic reminders before it expires, sign up for a free Expirel account no credit card required. Full camera barcode scanning is available on paid plans.

A standard barcode alone cannot tell you if a product is expired, because UPC and EAN-13 barcodes do not contain the expiry date. To find out if something is expired, you need to check the date printed on the packaging. Expirel makes this easy: scan the barcode to identify the product, enter the expiry date from the label, and Expirel will show you a clear 'Days Left' or 'Expired' status. For products you have already tracked, the dashboard shows the exact status at a glance so you never have to search for the packaging again.

Expirel is one of the best expiry date barcode scanner tools available online and free to start, because it combines instant product identification from any barcode with automatic expiry tracking and reminders in one browser-based platform. Unlike standalone barcode scanner apps that only show product information, Expirel builds a tracked inventory you can access from any device without downloading anything. The free plan includes manual tracking and reminders, while paid plans unlock full camera barcode scanning.

Yes, for GS1-128 and DataMatrix barcodes used in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and industrial products, Expirel automatically reads the embedded expiry date using the GS1 Application Identifier 17 field. For standard UPC and EAN-13 barcodes found on most food and household products, the expiry date is not embedded it is only on the label. In those cases, Expirel identifies the product from the barcode and prompts you to enter the expiry date from the packaging in one tap.

Not all barcodes store expiry dates. UPC (12 digits) and EAN-13 (13 digits) barcodes store only a product identifier no expiry date. GS1-128 (also called Code 128 with GS1 formatting) can store expiry dates using Application Identifier 17 in YYMMDD format. GS1 DataMatrix barcodes, common in pharmaceuticals and medical devices, also store expiry dates, batch numbers, and serial numbers. QR codes can store expiry dates when the manufacturer programs them to. Expirel supports all of these formats and reads embedded expiry data automatically when it is present.

To check the expiry date of a food product from its barcode, scan the barcode with Expirel. Most food products use UPC or EAN-13 barcodes which do not embed the expiry date, so Expirel identifies the food product automatically and then asks you to enter the Best Before or Use By date from the packaging. Once saved, Expirel tracks the item and sends you a reminder before it expires helping you reduce food waste at home, in restaurants, and in retail stores.

No. Standard UPC, EAN-13, and most commercial product barcodes do not encode a purchase date. They store only a product identifier (GTIN) used to look up product details at the point of sale. Some GS1-128 and DataMatrix barcodes used in logistics can store production dates or expiry dates, but purchase dates are recorded separately in point-of-sale systems and are never embedded in the product barcode itself.

Expirel does not rely on a single fixed database. When you scan a product, it fetches details including name, brand, category, and image from multiple sources including Google, Amazon, and Open Food Facts. If details are not available from any source, you can manually enter the product name and expiry date and save it to your inventory. Expirel still tracks it and sends you reminders.

The barcode number lookup tool on this page is free to use with no account required. Full camera barcode scanning where you point your phone at a product and Expirel reads it in under 3 seconds is available on paid plans. The free plan includes manual product tracking, expiry date entry, and automatic reminders. Paid plans unlock camera scanning, advanced reporting, and higher product limits for businesses.

Yes. Expirel works across all barcoded product categories food, beverages, medicines, supplements, cosmetics, and household products. Many users track pantry items and medications on the same account using separate category views. This makes Expirel especially useful for families managing the entire household in one place, as well as pharmacies and clinics that need to track medication stock expiry dates.
